Vietnam exported around 3.2 million tonnes of fuel pellets of various types last year, making it the world’s second largest exporter of the products, according to the General Department of Customs.
The Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association (VIFOREST) reported that Vietnamese pellets were mostly exported to Japan and the Republic of Korea to provide input for thermal power production.
Pellets are biomass fuel generally made from wood wastes, such as wood shavings, sawdust, and logging residues; and agricultural wastes, for example, rice husks, corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and coffee pulps. The country’s shipment of pellets rocketed to 3.2 million tonnes last year from just 175.5 tonnes in 2013. The export revenue increased 15.3 fold from nearly 23 million USD in 2013 to 351 million USD in 2020.
Vietnam has about 80 pellet factories and production facilities, mostly in the southeastern and northeastern regions, with combined capacity of close to 4.5 million tonnes per year.
The VIFOREST forecast the global demand for pellets is likely to spur about 250 percent over the next decade, to 36 million tonnes in 2030./.

The 20,388-teu Ever Given ran aground in the southern part of the Suez Canal on March 23, blocking the world's vital traffic for six days.
There was no cargo damage or any pollution as a result of this, but some 400 ships were delayed. Ever Given is currently operated by Taiwan-based Evergreen Shipping, which is one of the largest oceanic vessels in operation.
After months of mooring in the Bitter Lakes section of the Suez Canal, the Ever Given is finally set to continue its voyage to Rotterdam this week.
The law firm representing the owner of the Japanese ship Shoei Kisen Kaisha, said yesterday it has reached a formal agreement on the amount of compensation paid by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) after the ship ran aground. After the ship was rescued, the canal authority asked the Japanese owner for compensation for the lost revenue and the cost of salvaging it. The channel regulator announced that lost revenue during the time the Ever Given was aground amounted to $12-15 million (€10-12.6 million) per day. Maritime data firm Lloyd's List said in April that the congestion was holding about $9.6 billion in cargo a day. “P&I Club of Great Britain announces that, by agreement in principle between the parties and following subsequent meetings with the SCA negotiating committee and numerous court hearings, a formal solution has now been agreed upon. mind".
The company added: "Preparations for the release of the ship will be carried out and an event marking the agreement will be held at the authorities' headquarters in Ismailia." According to Loadstar, the signing of the agreement is scheduled for Wednesday, and the Ever Given vessel is expected to depart the same day for the main Dutch port on July 16-17.

An explosion on a container ship docked at Dubai's Jebel Ali port late Wednesday caused a large fire and was felt across the city, authorities said.

There were no reported deaths or injuries and the fire was brought under control, authorities said. The Comoros Islands-owned ship was docked at the port when the blast occurred in a container holding cleaning products, according to Dubai's Civil Defense chief Rashed Al Matroush.
The Dubai Media Office posted a video of firefighters putting out the blaze at the port amid smoldering wreckage as plumes of smoke billowed through the air.
Several CNN personnel in Dubai said they heard and felt the explosion, which caused buildings to shake, as far away as 15 kilometers away from the port. Social media video showed a large ball of fire burst from the port area lighting up the night sky.
Jebel Ali is the ninth largest port in the world and the biggest in the region. Port authorities said they were "taking all necessary measures to ensure the normal movement of ships in the port continues without any disruption."
Jebel Ali is a busy port of call for US warships. The USNS Wally Schirra was the only US Navy ship in the port at the time of the of the explosion. There were no reports of injuries on the ship.
Dubai is the Middle East's largest commercial hub and the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, which has been island of security despite decades of turmoil in the region.
