Wood products are always exploited and processed to create finished products that are widely used and popular in interior design. MDF and Plywood are two typical products favored by many customers because of their versatility, durability and high aesthetics. So which type would be better for making indoor furniture? Let's explore, learn and make the best choice through the article below.

1/ MDF

1.1/ What is MDF?

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard): MDF is the common name for all two types of plywood products with medium density (medium density) and high density (hardboard). To distinguish these two types, they rely on physical and mechanical parameters, parameters of thickness and surface treatment of the board. In terms of structure, MDF board has the basic components that are: wood fiber powder, adhesive, paraffin wax, wood protection agent (anti-termite, anti-mold), and inorganic filler powder.

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)

MDF is classified in many different ways. In terms of surface, there are Melamine coatings for beauty, moisture and scratch resistance, Oak veneers, Spokes, Ash or Peaches. Type that has water-resistant, fire-resistant, impact-resistant than Melamine has a variety of colors and finally Acrylic covered MDF: shiny mica plastic or Acrylic glass, modern colors, popular in the interior field. In addition, MDF is also classified by Formaldehyde concentration, color or board size.

1.2/ Advantages of MDF

  • Minimizing warping, shrinking or termites like natural wood to help the product have a long life.
  • Flat surface, easy to process and multi-application suitable for furniture. Currently widely used for making cabinets, tables, wall tiles, decorations, TV shelves, beds, ...
  • Cheaper than natural wood.
  • Easily combined with other surface materials papillary Veneer, acrylic, melamine, laminate, etc.
  • Available materials, fast construction time with locally available natural hardwood materials.

1.3/ Disadvantages of MDF

  • Poor water resistance.
  • Cannot make intricate carvings like natural wood.
  • Limited thickness, limited toughness.
  • Harmful to users.
  • MDF lacks the beauty of natural wood grains and the ability to carve intricate designs on the surface.

2/ Plywood

2.1/ What is plywood?

Many types of Vietnam plywood for making furniture

Plywood is a form of wood that is made up of many thin, similar-sized wooden planks that are stacked and glued together with a particular glue. Plywood is widely utilized in everyday life, particularly in the design and manufacture of furniture. Plywood wood has an advanced production process, is pressed under high pressure and heat, so it is very good quality and ensures safe use.

Plywood has a wide range of types depending on the veneer surface, manufacturing process, and intended use. Some popular types: Film faced plywood, Commercial plywood, Packing plywood, and Birch plywood. Currently, plywood is widely used in many fields: construction, furniture, packaging, ... The number of wood panels used for plywood must be odd, depending on the thickness of the wood plank that is used. 3, 5, 7, or 9 layers of wood to create. The reason for this is to create a core layer in the middle of the wood. Then, the two layers of wood outside the core layer will have the same grain direction. The grain direction of the outer layers will be arranged perpendicularly to increase the bearing capacity as well as prevent the warping and cracking of the wood.

2.2/ Advantages of Plywood

  • The hardness and durability are quite high thanks to the process of glue spraying and hot pressing 2 times.
  • More water-resistant than MDF thanks to the use of Phenol or WBP glue.
  • Faster sanding and PU coating time thanks to the smooth surface after finishing.
  • The ability to stick to screws and screws is good, the surface is beautiful, so it is also flexibly used for furniture: cabinets, desks, bookshelves, and wall decorations, ...

2.3/ Disadvantages of Plywood

  • During cutting or long-term use, plywood easily detaches.
  • Peeling or tearing technical faults in the manufacturing process, as well as packaging errors.
  • Can't be as uniform and beautiful as MDF.
  • Price is more expensive than MDF.

3/ MDF vs Plywood, Which material is better for furniture making?

MDF & Plywood are popular and widely used in furniture production

Both MDF and Plywood are popular and widely used in furniture production today. Each product has its own advantages, the advantage of this one is the weakness of the other. Considering the cost, MDF is completely competitive, in terms of moisture resistance, water-resistance and hardness, plywood will be better. However, because of the purpose of indoor use, the removal of both types should be considered selectively and avoid affecting health.

Because of its numerous desirable features, MDF is still the preferred material for indoor furniture construction. Plywood is more durable than many built-in applications, such as packing products, in outdoor conditions. As a result, consider the target item, the needs, and the digital requirements before selecting the best solution. Please contact us for more information and support on these two products, we will respond to all of your queries as soon as possible.
